Local SEO in Egypt: How to Rank on Google Maps Using Google's Official Factors

How Google ranks local businesses on Maps (relevance, distance, prominence), and the practical steps Egyptian clinics, restaurants, offices and service companies can take: profile setup, reviews, website pages and common mistakes.

When someone in Nasr City searches "dentist near me" or "air conditioning maintenance Maadi", Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any normal website result. Being in that map pack can bring more calls than a paid ad, and it costs nothing except effort. Yet many Egyptian businesses have an unclaimed, half-filled or duplicated listing, or none at all.

The short answer: Google says local results are ranked mainly on three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known your business is, including links to your website and reviews). You cannot pay for a better local ranking. You improve it by verifying and completing your Google Business Profile, collecting genuine reviews, keeping your details consistent, and backing the profile with a good local website.

This guide explains each factor in plain terms, with steps that work for clinics, restaurants, law and engineering offices, showrooms and service companies across Egypt.

Key takeaways

  • Google's official local ranking factors are relevance, distance and prominence. There is no paid shortcut.
  • A verified, complete Google Business Profile is the foundation: correct category, hours, phone, photos and description.
  • Reviews count toward prominence, but only genuine ones. Google's policies forbid paying or rewarding customers for reviews.
  • Your website supports your profile: a clear page per location and service, with the same name, address and phone.
  • Google has 95.37% of search share in Egypt (StatCounter, August 2026), so Google Maps is where local customers look.

The three official factors, explained

Google's own Business Profile help page on local ranking names the three factors that decide who appears in local results.

FactorGoogle's definitionWhat you control
RelevanceHow well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching forPrimary category, services, description, website content
DistanceHow far each business is from the customer searchingAn accurate address or service area (you cannot fake it)
ProminenceHow well known a business is, including links to its website and reviewsReviews, local links and mentions, a strong website

The same page states clearly: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." Anyone who promises a guaranteed top-three map position is promising something Google says it does not sell.

Step 1: Set up and verify your Google Business Profile correctly

Use your real business name

Google's guidelines say your name should reflect your real-world name as used on your storefront, website and stationery. Adding keywords such as "Best Dental Clinic Nasr City" to the name breaks the rules and can get the profile suspended. If your sign reads in Arabic and English, use the name customers actually know.

Address or service area

  • If customers visit you (clinic, restaurant, showroom, office), use a precise address with the correct pin on the map. In areas where addresses are informal, check the pin carefully and add clear directions in your description or website, for example the nearest landmark.
  • If you go to customers (maintenance, cleaning, pest control), Google says you should hide your address and set a service area instead.
  • P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes are not acceptable, and virtual offices are only allowed if they are staffed with signage during business hours.

Choose the fewest, most specific categories

Google advises using as few categories as possible to describe your core business, answering "this business IS a" rather than "this business HAS a". A physiotherapy centre should choose physiotherapy, not also "gym" because it has equipment.

One profile per location

Do not create several profiles for the same location, even from different accounts. If you have branches in Heliopolis and Sheikh Zayed, each real branch gets its own profile. Duplicates confuse customers and can hurt visibility.

Step 2: Complete every field that helps relevance

Google's help page recommends keeping business information current and complete, and adding photos and videos. In practice, fill in:

  • Opening hours, including special hours during Ramadan and public holidays.
  • A phone number that is answered, and a WhatsApp-friendly mobile if that is how customers reach you.
  • Your website link, pointing to the page for that branch rather than always the home page.
  • Services or menu items, written the way customers search, in Arabic and English where relevant.
  • A factual description of what you do and where you serve, without keyword stuffing.
  • Real photos: the entrance from the street, the reception, the team, the products. They also help customers find you.

Step 3: Earn reviews the right way

Reviews are part of prominence, and they strongly affect whether a searcher chooses you. Google's policy on fake engagement is strict:

  • You may ask customers to share a genuine experience, without offering anything in return.
  • You may not offer payment, discounts, free goods or services in exchange for reviews.
  • You may not discourage negative reviews or ask only happy customers for reviews.
  • You should not pressure customers to leave a review while they are on your premises.

A practical routine for a clinic or service company: after the visit or job is completed, send one polite message with the review link to every customer, not only the satisfied ones. Then reply to reviews, positive and negative, within a few days. A calm, specific reply to a complaint shows future customers how you handle problems. Google's help page lists responding to reviews among its tips.

Step 4: Make your website support your local profile

Your profile and your website work together. Prominence includes links to your website, and relevance is reinforced when your site clearly describes your services and locations.

  1. One page per location. A company with branches in Cairo and Alexandria should have a page for each, with address, map, hours, phone and directions.
  2. One page per core service. "Knee physiotherapy" and "sports injury rehabilitation" deserve their own pages if customers search for them separately.
  3. Consistent details. Use exactly the same name, address and phone on the website, the profile, Facebook and directories.
  4. LocalBusiness structured data. Marking up your name, address, phone and hours helps search engines read them. It must match what is visible on the page.
  5. Mobile speed. Most local searches happen on phones. A slow page wastes the click you earned from the map.

Set up Google Search Console to see which local queries bring people to your site. Our guide to Search Console reports for business owners explains which reports to watch.

Step 5: Build prominence beyond Google

Prominence reflects how well known you are, online and offline. Actions that help:

  • Being listed accurately in relevant Egyptian directories and professional bodies' member lists.
  • Getting mentioned by local press, partners, suppliers or event organisers, with a link to your site.
  • Publishing useful content in Arabic that people in your area search for, for example a clinic explaining preparation for a procedure.

Measure what the listing brings you

Local SEO should be judged by calls, direction requests, bookings and visits, not only by where you appear. Three simple habits help:

  • Add a tracking parameter to the website link in your profile (for example ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp) so visits from the listing show separately in Google Analytics.
  • Check your profile's performance data monthly for calls, messages and direction requests, and compare branches.
  • Ask new customers how they found you, and record it at reception or in your CRM. It is low-tech and still one of the most reliable signals.

Common mistakes we see in Egyptian listings

  • The profile was created by a former employee or agency, and nobody in the company has access.
  • The map pin sits on the wrong street after a move, or the old branch is still showing as open.
  • Hours are never updated for Ramadan or holidays, and customers arrive to a closed door.
  • The phone number on the profile is a landline nobody answers.
  • Owners argue with reviewers in public instead of replying professionally.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my business to appear on Google Maps in Egypt?

Create or claim your Google Business Profile, verify it, choose the right category and complete your address or service area, hours, phone and photos. Once verified, your business can appear in Maps and local results.

Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?

No. Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Paid advertising is a separate product and does not buy you an organic local position.

Can I have a Google Business Profile without an office?

Yes, if you serve customers at their location. Google asks service-area businesses to hide their address and set the areas they serve instead.

Do reviews affect local ranking?

Google includes reviews in prominence, one of its three factors. Collect genuine reviews from all customers, never buy or reward them, and reply to them professionally.

How long does local SEO take to show results?

Profile fixes such as hours and categories can reflect quickly, while reviews and prominence build over months. Google's SEO Starter Guide notes that some changes take effect in a few hours and others can take several months.
