Google Search Console is free, comes straight from Google, and shows how your website actually performs in Google Search. Yet many Egyptian business owners have never logged in, or the account belongs to a former agency. The result is that decisions about the website are made on opinions instead of data.

The short answer: as a business owner, you need only a handful of Search Console reports. The Performance report shows which searches bring people to your site and which pages they land on. The Page indexing report shows whether Google has indexed your important pages. The Core Web Vitals report shows whether real visitors get a fast experience. Newer additions, such as the branded queries filter and the Generative AI performance report, show how people find you and whether your pages appear in AI answers. Fifteen minutes a month with these reports is enough to spot problems early.

This guide explains each report in plain language, what "good" looks like, and a simple monthly routine.

Key takeaways

  • Make sure the Search Console property is owned by your company, not only by an agency or former employee.
  • The Performance report gives clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position, by query, page, country, device and date, with up to 16 months of history.
  • Not every URL should be indexed. Focus on whether your important pages are.
  • Core Web Vitals in Search Console are based on real-user data and split into mobile and desktop.
  • Since 31 August 2026, every site can see its visibility in Google's generative AI features in a dedicated report.

Before the reports: ownership and access

Search Console access is tied to Google accounts. Check three things:

  1. The owner is a company account, for example the managing director or IT manager, not a freelancer's personal Gmail.
  2. Your agency has user access, not ownership. You can remove it when the contract ends.
  3. The property covers the whole domain, including both www and non-www, http and https, and both language versions if you have Arabic and English sections.

Also link Search Console with Google Analytics. Search Console tells you what happened before the click; Analytics tells you what visitors did after it, such as submitting a form or tapping the WhatsApp button.

Report 1: Performance, where your traffic comes from

Google's Performance report documentation defines four metrics:

MetricGoogle's definitionWhat it tells you
ClicksTimes a user clicked your site from Google Search resultsActual visits from search
ImpressionsHow many times your site appeared in Search resultsVisibility, even without clicks
CTRClicks divided by impressionsHow attractive your title and snippet are
Average positionAverage position of the topmost result from your siteRough ranking level; interpret with care

You can break these down by queries, pages, countries, devices, search appearance and dates, and filter by search type.

Questions the Performance report answers

  • Which searches bring customers? Open the Queries tab. You may find that people search "برنامج حسابات ومخازن" more than the term you used on your site.
  • Which pages earn visibility but few clicks? Sort pages by impressions and look for low CTR. A clearer title and description often help.
  • Is traffic from Egypt or abroad? Use the Countries tab, useful if you also target the Gulf.
  • How do mobile and desktop compare? Use the Devices tab. In Egypt, mobile usually dominates.

Recent additions worth using

  • Branded queries filter. Introduced in November 2025 and available to all eligible sites since March 2026, it separates searches containing your brand name from all other searches. Non-branded traffic shows how new customers discover you.
  • Query groups. Launched in October 2025 in the Insights report for eligible properties, it groups similar queries, including misspellings and different phrasings, which is useful for Arabic spelling variants.
  • Weekly and monthly views. Added in December 2025, they smooth out daily noise, such as weekend dips.
  • Custom annotations. Since November 2025, you can add a note of up to 120 characters to the chart, for example "new website launched" or "Ramadan hours". Everyone with access can see them, so keep personal data out.

Note that some queries are hidden to protect user privacy (anonymized queries). They are included in chart totals but not shown in the query table, so the table will not add up to the total.

Report 2: Page indexing, is Google storing your pages?

The Page indexing report lists indexed and non-indexed URLs, with a reason for each non-indexed group, such as "Crawled - currently not indexed", "Duplicate without user-selected canonical", "Excluded by 'noindex' tag" or "Not found (404)".

Google's documentation for this report is reassuring: you should not expect all URLs on your site to be indexed, only the canonical pages, and non-indexed URLs can be fine. What matters:

  • Your service pages, location pages, key articles and home page in both languages are indexed.
  • No important page is excluded by an accidental noindex or blocked by robots.txt.
  • A sudden rise in "Not found (404)" or "Server error (5xx)" after a website change is investigated quickly.

Use the URL Inspection tool to check a single page: whether it is indexed, which canonical Google chose, and how Google rendered it. After publishing an important page, you can request indexing there. And submit your XML sitemap in the Sitemaps report so Google can discover new pages.

Report 3: Core Web Vitals, is the site fast for real visitors?

The Core Web Vitals report is based on real-world usage data from Chrome users. It groups similar URLs and labels them Good, Need improvement or Poor, separately for mobile and desktop. A group's status reflects its worst metric. Google's thresholds for a good experience are Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1.

If a small site shows no data, it usually means there is not enough traffic for real-user measurement yet. After a fix, you can start validation, which monitors the issue for 28 days.

Report 4: Generative AI performance, are you in AI answers?

In June 2026, Google launched Search Generative AI performance reports and rolled them out to all websites worldwide on 31 August 2026. They show impressions of your URLs within generative AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, and in Discover, with breakdowns by page, country, device and date. This data is also included in the overall Performance report. For Arabic content, it helps you see whether your pages are used as sources in Arabic AI answers. Our guide to appearing in Google AI Overviews in Arabic explains how to improve that visibility.

In September 2026, Google also began adding a multimodal search type, covering searches made with images such as Google Lens and Circle to Search. It matters most for businesses whose products are often photographed and searched.

Reports to check only when needed

  • Manual actions and security issues: should be empty. If anything appears there, act immediately.
  • Links: shows which sites link to you and your most linked pages.
  • Removals: for urgently hiding a page from results, for example one published by mistake.

A 15-minute monthly routine

  1. Performance: compare the last 3 months with the previous period, in weekly view. Note clicks and impressions trends.
  2. Apply the branded filter and check whether non-branded clicks are growing.
  3. List the top 10 queries and top 10 pages. Look for pages with high impressions and low CTR.
  4. Page indexing: confirm your key pages are indexed; review new errors.
  5. Core Web Vitals: check the mobile tab for Poor or Need improvement groups.
  6. Generative AI report: see which pages appear in AI features.
  7. Add annotations for anything that changed this month: a redesign, a campaign, new pages.

When traffic drops, Google's guide to debugging search traffic drops recommends viewing the last 16 months to spot seasonal patterns and comparing periods. It lists causes such as technical issues, security issues, spam policy violations, algorithm updates, site moves and changes in search interest.

Frequently asked questions

What is Google Search Console used for?

It shows how your site performs in Google Search: the queries that show your pages, clicks and impressions, which pages are indexed, speed issues from real users, and any security or manual action problems. It is free.

What is the difference between Search Console and Google Analytics?

Search Console covers what happens in Google Search before the click. Analytics covers what visitors do on your site after they arrive, from any source. Use both, linked together.

Why are some of my pages not indexed?

Common reasons include duplicates, pages marked noindex, pages blocked by robots.txt, or pages Google crawled but chose not to index. Google says not every URL should be indexed; check that your important pages are.

How far back does Search Console data go?

The Performance report lets you view up to the last 16 months. Export data regularly if you want a longer history.

Why does my average position look good but traffic is low?

Average position is calculated from your topmost result across many queries, so a few well-ranked but rarely searched terms can make it look strong. Check impressions and clicks per query and per page to see the real picture.
