In plain words
Express is the framework the server side of your system is built on. It receives every request — a visitor opening a page, an order being placed, an employee saving a record — sends it to the right piece of code, and returns the answer.
It is also where the protective layers sit: who you are, what you are allowed to do, whether what you sent is valid, how often you may ask, and what gets written to the log.
