In plain words
Ubuntu Server is the Linux distribution your server runs. We use the long-term-support releases, which receive security updates for five years, and set the machine up with a firewall, key-only logins and automatic security patching.
Ubuntu Server
The operating system underneath everything: a long-term-support Linux release, hardened at setup and kept patched for years.
What it does for you
The layer nobody thinks about is the one attackers scan for first, and an unpatched server undoes every other precaution.
A long-term-support release also means your system does not need rebuilding every year to stay supported. It is the platform the rest of this stack is built and tested on.
What it gives your system
- Security updates for five years on each LTS release
- Firewall on, password logins off, keys only
- Security patches applied automatically
- The platform the rest of the stack is built and tested on
